We're still friends
Punt WG Amsterdam / Duo with Tim Neutel • 2022The works reflect on a shortcut to familiar ground, and what insights and outlooks might become available from this. A coming in an out of reach that makes vivid or firmly grabs hold of a site.
The poster has been designed by Linnea Rutz. Press release by Archie C. Hyde. Poem by Karólína Rós Ólafsdóttir.
In this work, porcelain-like ornaments are carved into the wall as targets and thirteen knives are planted at hand level. On each knife is engraved a quote from Kafka’s short story The rescue will begin on it’s own time: “Isn’t it more surprising if something succeeds than if it fails?” This sentence is pronounced by a farmer to his children, after he spent the night trying to slice a loaf of bread without success.
In theory when thrown, a knife is set in rotation and thus points alternately at the target and the thrower. On the wall installation, the knives miss the target systematically in terms of center but rigorously follow a pattern and thus become also ornamental. It is a cancellation by contrary forces, just like success has to face a resistance or like a throwing comes down to aiming at oneself.
The title "We're still friends" refers to my breakup that coincided with the exhibition. It is also a double-edged phrase. We're still friends implies, were we ever?
